Local assemblymen appointed vice chairs of committees

Assemblyman Troy Singleton, D-Burlington, will serve as vice chairman of the Assembly Education Committee. Singleton, of Palmyra, has sponsored several major education reform initiatives since joining the legislature in 2011, including measures to improve education in some of the state's poorest.

The Assembly Education Committee addresses issues concerning education curricula, school finance, school boards and districts, school transportation, students, teachers, tuition and student aid, vocational and higher education.

"We face many issues in New Jersey, but ensuring a quality education for every child must always be our priority. Education truly opens doors to a better future, and can be the cure to so many of our problems," said Singleton, who received his Bachelor of Science in business administration from Rowan University.

Assemblyman Angel Fuentes, D-Camden/Gloucester, has become vice chairman of the Assembly Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee. The committee is responsible for monitoring the protection of citizens of the State of New Jersey. The panel oversees issues affecting counter-terrorism, risk assessments, infrastructure protections, emergency communications, border security and cyber security.

"The horrible headlines we see from around the world are an ever-present reminder that we must never waver from our vigilance. New Jersey must always be prepared, and I look forward to ensuring that through this new leadership role," said Fuentes, of Camden, a member of the Assembly since 2010.He received his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from St. John Vianney College and Seminary in Miami, Florida.
